It's complicated?

I have come across a lot of websites in friendster, hi5, myspace etc that show, among other things, relationship status. Some say "single" while others say "married." I have even seen open relationship as the status. This is all well and good, but then there's one I come across that I can't figure out- "it's complicated"

I've run this through my mind a few times to try and figure out it's meaning. Personally, I think any of the relationship status's can be complicated, but a complicated relationship on its own? Maybe it's a relationship that doesn't fit into any other category? We're dating, but we're not? Friends with benefits? Married, but not in the eyes of God?

I'm reaching out to you dear readers to explain to me what in God's green earth does this phrase "it's complicated" mean?

Thanks :)

  1. My first thought is it's a FWB thing. I know I thought about using that myself at one point when I was in one of these. One thing's for sure...steer clear!

  2. Hi Lisaq, thank you for the comment and advice :)

Just one thing, what does FWB mean? I'm not quite up on the acronyms these days lol

  3. Hi Bobby.

I don't know if you have a Facebook account, but it gives you an option to set your relationship profile as "its complicated" and it's quite interesting actually how many of my personal friends change their relationship status from "in a relationship", "its complicated", "single" and then back through the vicious cycle again.

I just roll my eyes. Please, these things are private. Can they just keep a lid on it?

  4. Hi Sharon, I don't have a facebook account, but I do on many other sites and know what you're talking about.

Ironically, the answer may be in your reply. The people that keep switching their profile status, probably should have their status set to "It's complicated" lol

    Question resolved...:)

  5. Hello Bobby,

I have a friend, who is a priest and the status he chose in one of the social networks is "Its complicated". Maybe it is used by those who are in a relationship which cannot be explained or something unusual. LOL
Funny but some used that status.

  6. I think it can mean a lot of different things, but I do know this - I would never go out with a guy who listed his relationship as "it's complicated".

  7. Hi Joyce!

Good point that I hadn't even thought about. A situation can indeed be complicated now that I think about it from your example and Sharon's.

    Thank you :)

    Hi Singlegirl!

I have heard this before from another person also. I guess the reason would be that we may not want to deal with someone who lists a complicated relationship? Who wants more complication anyway!

    Good point, thank you :)

  8. I use this "complicated status" in my friendster account when I felt hanging with my bf...I was confused with my feelings for him but I was afraid of what might happen to him if I break up with him..It was really really hard for me..it was a tough decision that I have to make

BTW, thanks Bob for visiting my blogs.I deeply appreciate it (^_^)Keep in touch

  9. Hi Jazzie!
Aha! Now I know another good reason why someone would use "It's complicated." It seems that you were in a kind of transition period with a lot of unknowns.

Thanks for the info and input :)

  10. or if the spouse or partner wants to come across as somewhat available to the world but then their spouse becomes friends with them and she doesnt realize the spouse can see that she just changed it from "its complicated" to "married".

  11. Thank you Doug, it's certainly a possibility!

  12. "Its complicated" status depends upon individual to individual. Its as you think at that point of time when u really post the status.

Thanks so much for your comment and input! :)
